INTERNATIONALIZATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION AT NAHDA UNIVERSITY
Nahda University (NUB) has started in the year 2006 and located in new Beni-Sewif, 120 Km south Cairo, Egypt. From the beginning, The University committed itself to promote a brand new image of academic and research excellence that this University has shown enormous potential for in the last seven years or so of its establishment the goals reflect our basic direction and policies to assure the high quality of the offered education programmes through international cooperation. The Policy of NUB for International cooperation with other countries aims for the following:
• Establishing Strategic Partnerships with other countries to achieve different activities of common interest.
• Signing bilateral general agreements with international universities
• New Initiatives for Joint Degrees
• Academic qualifications.
• Increasing the competition in the labour market across the border.
• Taking advantage of the advanced technology and the internationalization of higher education system
• Increasing the opportunities for employment in international companies.
• Increasing cultural diversity and critical thinking for solving problems
• Increasing mobility of students and staff members
NUB invests much in programmes that lead to the student’s personal development. All this should eventually result in producing graduates who are not only effective in their field of their choice, but are also capable of being independent entrepreneurs who possess commendable and praiseworthy traits.
Nahda University believes that internationalization of higher educational is able to provide global society with an education that meets current needs and that can respond efficiently to contemporary demands and challenges, which are characterized by globalization, interdependence, and multiculturalism.
Nahda University supports the main topics of the internationalization in higher education from mobility, mutual influence of higher education systems, and internationalization of the substance of teaching and learning to institutional strategies, knowledge transfer, cooperation and competition, and national and supranational policies.
Nahda University established an Office of International Affairs (QIA). This unit works toward integrating global perspectives into all aspects of the university's mission as well as strengthening NUB's presence in the world.
Through building global partnerships, developing international programs, integrating global perspectives into the curriculum, and actively engaging the NUB community in global awareness initiatives, the Office of International Affairs helps to spearhead the University’s commitment to being locally responsive and globally engaged.
As the “University Center” for global engagement, OIA consists of the following units to support NUB’s international capacity: Office of International Services, Study Abroad Office, Global Training Initiative, and Intensive English Program. OIA develops and implements university-wide programs for the campus internationalization. Several faculty advisory groups provide guidance on program and partnership development within specific regions: e.g. Europe, USA, and Asia as well as Arabic and Islamic worlds
The OIA Strategic Plan supports the University’s major goals as outlined in the NUB’s Strategic Plan “The Pathway to the Future” - Enhancing Global Engagement and Enhancing Student Success through educational innovation.
ACTION PLANS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES
1) Create, implement and coordinate more university-wide initiatives, international programs for faculty, staff and students to gain and expand global perspectives
2) Promote campus-wide communication for greater awareness of global opportunities and engagement
3) Increasing knowledge of established and ongoing programs within the campus community
4) Developing internationally-focused programs for students, faculty and staff, which provide cultural and academic learning opportunities.
5) Establish several key NUB hubs around the globe; and
6) Develop comprehensive programs with strategic partners for teaching, research, and economic development.
7) Increasing opportunities for student mobility, faculty research and economic development
8) Increasing opportunities for faculty, staff and students to pursue global learning and scholarship across disciplines at or through selected hubs
9) Integrate global perspectives into the curriculum;
10) Integrate study abroad into the curriculum through Curriculum Integration;
11) Increase the effective implementation of high-impact global experiences;
12) Increase number of participants in Global Perspectives Certificate program among undergraduate students;
13) Increase number of General Education courses fulfilling the Global Knowledge Co-requisite;
14) Support development of dual International degree programs;
15) Create new internationally-focused interdisciplinary curricula to prepare students across disciplines to compete in the new global economy; and
16) Provide meaningful and sustained opportunities for cross-cultural interactions here on campus.
17) Support faculty and staff activities while providing opportunities for international collaboration and interdisciplinary scholarship to address the grand challenges of society
18) Enhance reward systems to encourage more global scholarship and engagement by faculty and staff;
19) Provide international activities, initiatives and opportunities on campus for faculty and staff to network and collaborate across disciplines
20) Increasing applications for international grants and awards by NUB faculty and staff
21) Increasing international presence and improved global reputation for the university
22) Greater awareness among faculty and staff of opportunities for funding and recognition at NUB
23) Increase the number of engaged, high-impact study abroad, service-learning, global internships, and other local and global learning activities available to students;
